SUNY Brockport Senior Athlete Spotlight – Darius Cervi #0 – Linebacker

Growing up in Lancaster, Darius Cervi was the odd one out in the best possible way. In a family where his siblings gravitated toward music, Cervi found his place on the athletic field. Football became his outlet, but his path to becoming a college linebacker was not always obvious.

His father was his biggest supporter from the beginning, even during the years when Cervi was buried on the depth chart. As a seventh-grader, Cervi was a fourth-string safety, a position that could have made it easy to question whether all the effort was paying off. His father never did.

He continued to believe in his son and encouraged him to stay the course, even when the results were not immediate. That early support gave Cervi something to carry with him as he continued to develop, both as a player and as a person.

That journey eventually brought Cervi to SUNY Brockport, where head coach Jason Mangone, a fellow Lancaster native, helped bring him to the Golden Eagles.

Cervi’s first two seasons were relatively quiet. As a freshman in 2023, he recorded seven tackles and a forced fumble in eight games. As a sophomore in 2024, he added five tackles in six games.

His junior season in 2025 was a different story.

Cervi played in all 11 games and finished with 34 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. One of the defining moments of his Brockport career came when he earned his first collegiate start. On the very first defensive play of that game, Cervi forced a fumble.

After spending years waiting for his chance, he made an immediate impact when it finally arrived.

That experience is also behind the advice Cervi gives younger players. He tells them to be patient, believe in their abilities and trust that their time will come.

He remembers the frustration of being a younger player who knew how much work he was putting into the game but was not seeing the results he wanted. There were times when he felt ready but still had to wait his turn.

Rather than allowing that frustration to define him, Cervi continued to prepare and stayed ready for the moment his number was called. Now, he can speak from experience about the importance of remaining committed when progress does not happen as quickly as expected.

His own career has shown him that development does not always follow a straight line, but when the opportunity finally comes, preparation can turn it into something meaningful.

Cervi has carried that same consistency into the classroom. A Sport Management major, he finished the 2025 season with a 3.7 GPA and earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition. He also represented Brockport on the Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year Team.

He appreciates Brockport’s smaller classrooms because they allow him to build relationships with professors and communicate with them directly, something he values as much as the education itself.

Now, as a senior, Cervi is preparing for his final season in a Golden Eagles uniform.

His story stretches from being a fourth-string seventh-grade safety in Lancaster to becoming a dependable linebacker at Brockport, with plenty of uncertainty and perseverance in between.

Along the way, he has learned that development takes time, setbacks do not have to define a player, and the belief of the people closest to you can carry you through difficult stretches.

For Cervi, there is one more season to play, one more chapter to write and one more chance to leave his mark on Brockport football.
