SUNY Brockport Senior Spotlight: Liam Malgieri, Offensive Lineman, #74
At 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, Liam Malgieri has become a formidable presence on the offensive line for SUNY Brockport. A senior for the Golden Eagles, Malgieri has established himself as a reliable blocker whose combination of strength, technique, and physicality has made him an important part of the team's offensive success. His development reached a significant milestone during the 2025 season when he earned All-Conference honors after helping anchor an offensive line that allowed remarkably few sacks.
Malgieri's athletic foundation was built in Fayetteville, New York, where he competed in football and wrestling at Fayetteville-Manlius Senior High School. Wrestling played an important role in his development, teaching him leverage, balance, footwork, and hand-fighting techniques that translated directly to the offensive line. From a young age, he also pursued year-round strength and speed training while maintaining a demanding academic schedule that included honors and Advanced Placement courses.
His college recruitment process was extensive, with visits to more than 20 programs before he ultimately chose SUNY Brockport. Under longtime head coach Jason Mangone, Malgieri found a program built on strong relationships, dedicated coaches, and a close-knit locker room culture. Throughout his college career, he developed from a promising prospect into an established contributor and a two-season team captain.
His path to his senior season, however, was not without adversity. During the summer, Malgieri suffered a lower back injury that left him barely able to walk for a week. The setback presented a significant challenge as he prepared for another demanding collegiate season. His recovery required patience, determination, and a willingness to work through adversity. He eventually returned to training and continued preparing for his senior campaign, adding another chapter of resilience to his collegiate journey.
Malgieri's influence has extended well beyond the football field. He was selected as one of four student-athletes to represent Brockport at the Empire 8 Conference Student-Athlete Leadership Summit, where he strengthened his skills in mental resilience, confidence, communication, and team dynamics. He brought those lessons back to a program where communication and trust are essential, particularly among offensive linemen who must work together on every play.
Away from football, Malgieri is pursuing a degree in physical education at Brockport. His family has also played a significant role in his athletic journey. His sister, Maddy Malgieri, has supported him throughout his football career, while his younger brother, Flynn Malgieri, followed a similar path as an offensive lineman before committing to play Division I football at Brown University. The brothers developed their competitive spirit early in life, often moving furniture aside in the living room so they could box and spar against each other.
As Malgieri approaches the final chapter of his collegiate career, his journey serves as a testament to the value of preparation and perseverance. He has overcome setbacks, embraced challenges, earned conference recognition, and become a player his teammates and coaches can depend on.
Yet when asked what advice he would give to the players following in his footsteps, his message has little to do with statistics, awards, or accolades. Instead, he encourages them to bet on themselves and enjoy every moment on the field because their playing days will end sooner than they realize.
After years of chasing the next repetition, the next game, and the next opportunity, Malgieri has come to appreciate an important lesson: The greatest reward isn't simply reaching the end of the journey. It's knowing you made the most of every moment along the way.
